Subaru Common Recalls

Subaru Common Recalls

Subaru Common Recalls

Since its founding in 1953, Subaru has become one of the world’s leading automakers. In the US, Subaru’s market consists of a small yet devoted core of buyers. Those who purchase Subaru vehicles do so because they believe in the company’s legacy and commitment to quality.

Yet Subaru vehicles, like any vehicle, can contain defects. Recent Subaru recalls underscore the need for vigilance and the importance of prompt fixes. If problems with your Subaru persist after several trips to the dealership for repairs, you may have a lemon vehicle on your hands. The experienced California lemon law attorneys at Wirtz Law APC can help.

Recent Subaru Recalls

Several recalls of Subaru vehicles have made news headlines recently. These include recalls for electrical systems and more.

Subaru of America, Inc. recently announced a recall of several models and model years, including:

Subaru is recalling them because the new inflators may experience degradation over time, causing the airbag propellant to malfunction in a crash.

Engine Control Module Problems

Subaru recently recalled certain 2017-2019 Impreza and 2018-2019 Crosstrek vehicles. The recall seeks to check and repair the Engine Control Module (ECM). Issues with the ECM may cause it to keep powering the ignition coil even when the engine is shut off. A short circuit, blown fuse, or stalled vehicle may result.

PCV Valve Issues

Certain 2017-2018 Impreza and 2018 Crosstrek vehicles are also under a recall to address issues with an aluminum Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve installed in these vehicles. This PCV valve may come apart, which can result in a sudden loss of power while driving. If this loss of power occurs, an accident and injuries may be the consequence.

Occupant Detection System Problems

In approximately 366,282 Subaru Forester vehicles from 2015-2018, an electrical connection in the front passenger seat’s Occupant Detection System (ODS) may come loose. A loose connection can cause the airbag to deactivate, even if there is a passenger in the seat. The recall focuses on the inspection and repair of the ODS sensor mat harness.

Fire Risks

In December 2022, Subaru issued a recall of select 2019-2022 Subaru Ascent vehicles due to an increased fire risk. The recall covers 271,964 vehicles.

The issue lies in the wiring within the vehicle’s heater, which may cause a fire while the heater is running. As of December 2022, Subaru owners had reported two fires. No injuries or crashes connected to those fires had been reported. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that owners park the vehicles outdoors and away from buildings until the problem is repaired.

Backup Cameras and Reverse Lights

In November 2023, Subaru announced a recall of over 95,000 vehicles, including:

  • 2021 Crosstrek SUVs
  • 2022 Forester SUVs
  • 2021 to 2023 Legacy Sedans and Outback SUVs

This recall focuses on a faulty switch that may prevent the car’s backup camera and backup lights from turning on when the vehicle is put in reverse. Some drivers have also noticed that the gear position indicator malfunctions, the check engine light turns on, or the vehicle does not start.

What Should I Do If My Vehicle Is a Lemon?

California lemon law protects owners who buy or lease their cars at retail. A vehicle does not need to be under a current recall to be protected under the lemon law. Issues that affect any part of the vehicle may be covered.

If you suspect you have a lemon vehicle:

Store all your paperwork in a safe place and keep a timeline. Gather all your paperwork concerning your vehicle’s problems. Include dealership paperwork, repair bills, towing bills, and any other costs associated with your vehicle’s issues. For example, if you need to buy a bus pass because your vehicle won’t get you to work, note this information in your paperwork. When you take your vehicle in for repairs or speak to the dealership, write down the date, time, and what was said. This paperwork provides evidence for your lemon law claim.
