Transmission Failure

The transmission or gearbox ensures that the correct amount of power reaches your wheels to drive at a given speed. The transmission ensures that the gear ratio between the engine and drive wheels adjusts to accommodate the desired speed of the car.

Common symptoms of transmission failures include:

  • Whining and clunking
  • Burning smell
  • Lack of response, hesitation
  • Lunging, or jerking
  • Noisy in neutral
  • Leaking fluid
  • Premature clutch replacements

Brake Fade or Failure

The brake system is one of the most important systems in a vehicle and is vital in preventing crashes. Most vehicles use either disk brakes, drum brakes, or hydraulic brakes. Brake failure is usually caused by faded brake pads or a malfunctioning brake booster.

Common symptoms of brake fade or failure include:

  • Brake light on
  • Wobbling or scraping when braking
  • Squealing when braking
  • Leaking fluid
  • Soft brake pedal
  • Burning smell when braking
  • Increased stopping distance

Ignition Coil or Spark Plug Failures

Sparks plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture within an engine’s cylinders, creating the explosion required to power to the engine. While failures can be caused by improper heat ranges or chemical contamination, the most common cause of damage to spark plugs results from improper torque installation.

Common symptoms of a spark plug failures include:

  • Slow acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Misfires
  • Difficulty starting the vehicle

Engine Cooling System Failure

A car’s engine cooling system is responsible for keeping the engine cool while it works to prevent overheating. The system does so by sending a liquid coolant through hoses and passages in the engine. As the coolant flows through these hoses and passages, it picks up and removes heat from the engine. The water pump has the job of keeping the coolant moving through the system, and the radiator re-cools the liquid so it can again be circulated through the passages in the motor.

Common symptoms of engine cooling system failure include:

  • Overheating, especially on city roads or “stop-and-go” traffic
  • Metallic smell coming from the engine compartment
  • Coolant leaks
  • Steam or smoke emanating from the engine compartment

Suspension System Failure

A vehicle’s suspension system is responsible for smoothing out the ride and increasing control by reducing the impact of bumps and hazards in the road. The suspension system is made up of several components, including the chassis, which holds the cab of the car. The springs support the vehicle weight and absorb and reduce excess energy from road shocks, along with the shock absorbers and struts. Finally, the anti-sway bar shifts the movement of the wheels and stabilizes the car.

Worn suspension components may reduce the stability of the vehicle and reduce driver control,  and accelerate wear on other suspension system components. Failed suspension parts can increase the risk of crash.

Common symptoms of suspension failure include:

  • Vehicle rides lower than normal
  • Vehicle looks uneven
  • Abnormal noises during operation
  • Vehicle pulling
  • Feeling every bump
  • Difficulty steering

Notable Jaguar Recalls

Passenger Frontal Airbag May Explode on Many Jaguar Models (NHTSA Safety Recall Campaign No. 18V010000)

  • In February 2018, Jaguar recalled over 16,500 of its vehicles due to defective passenger airbag inflators that are prone to exploding.
  • According to Jaguar, a defect in the air bag inflator may cause the inflator to explode without warning. Inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Instrument Cluster Goes Blank in Many Jaguar Vehicles (NHTSA Safety Recall Campaign No. 17V153000)

  • From 2017 to 2018, Jaguar disseminated multiple recalls covering about 10,000 affected vehicles, for defective instrument clusters.
  • According to Jaguar, vehicles with the defect will intermittently have the instrument cluster go blank. A blank instrument cluster in Jaguars will not show important information like vehicle speed, increasing the risk of crash.

Fuel Tank Flange May Leak (NHTSA Safety Recall Campaign No. 20V081000)

  • In February 2020, Jaguar recalled nearly 3,000 XF model vehicles for a fuel tank flange that may crack and leak fuel.
  • According to Jaguar, it is possible that the fuel talk outlet may crack over time. Owners may notice a fuel odor, an indicator light on the instrument cluster may illuminate, and liquid fuel mat leak on the ground. In some circumstances, liquid fuel may accumulate underneath the vehicle, which in the presence of an ignition source, could lead to a fire.

About Jaguar

At Wirtz Law APC, we are dedicated to protecting consumers from large automakers like Jaguar. Jaguar is a British auto manufacturer with its global headquarters in Coventry, England. In January 2013, Jaguar fully merged with auto manufacturer Land Rover. In 2016, the company announced its United States headquarters would be relocated to Mahwah, New Jersey. Jaguar has established manufacturing plants all over the world including China, Brazil, Italy, India, and Slovakia.

2017 was the most successful sales year for Jaguar in the United States. Their new electric SUVs are incredibly popular. Even though sales of Jaguar-branded vehicles were down in 2018 and 2019  as compared to 2017, the British luxury is expected to find more success in the U.S. market as more and more customers are switching to electric vehicles.

Jaguar vehicles have historically been unreliable cars. With consistently poor reviews, the company cuts prices, turns expensive options into standard equipment, and offers long warranties in response to continue attracting buyers. Yet, the company still remains among the worst automakers in terms of reliability and customer satisfaction.

I think I have a lemon. What do I do now?

Under California’s Lemon Law, if you’ve given an automaker a “reasonable number of attempts” to repair your vehicle but the problems persist, your car might qualify for repurchase or replacement. Big automakers like Jaguar often try to muddy the water and re-define the analysis of Lemon Law qualification to their benefit – which is why consumers should never fight the big automakers alone! Generally speaking, as few as two (2) repair opportunities can be enough for your car to qualify. Don’t rely on Jaguar’s evaluation of your repair history, contact the professionals at Wirtz Law today.
