The engine is the heart of the vehicle. A car can’t drive without a properly working engine.
Common symptoms of engine failures include:
- Engine Control Module (ECM) warning lights on the dash
- Check engine lights
- No start, excessive cranking
- Lack of acceleration
- Loss of power
- Stalling (most often when attempting to shift gear)
The transmission or gearbox ensures that the correct amount of power reaches your wheels to drive at a given speed. The transmission ensures that the gear ratio between the engine and drive wheels adjusts to accommodate the desired speed of the car.
Common symptoms of transmission failures include:
- Whining and clunking
- Burning smell
- Lack of response, hesitation
- Lunging, or jerking
- Noisy in neutral
- Leaking fluid
- Premature clutch replacements
The turbocharger on a car applies a very similar principle to a piston engine. It uses the exhaust gas to drive a turbine that spins an air compressor. That extra air and oxygen is pushed into the cylinders at a high speed. This allows the engine to burn more fuel each second, making the car much faster.
Common symptoms of turbocharger failure include:
- Loss of power
- Slower and louder acceleration
- Difficulty maintaining high speeds
- Blue or grey smoke from exhaust.
Steering System Defects
Steering system defects cause serious safety problems since a vehicle’s steering system is responsible for a driver’s ability to direct the vehicle and avoid a collision.
Common symptoms of steering and suspension defects include:
- Difficulty turning the wheel
- Premature tire wearing
- Vehicle does not drive straight
- Loose steering
- Unresponsive steering
- Grinding, rattling, screeching, or other noise while turning the wheel
- Steering wheel slipping
- Excessive vibration

Notable Genesis Recalls
Oil May Leak Onto Exhaust Manifold (NHTSA Safety Recall Campaign No. 19V538000)
- In July 2019, Hyundai recalled more than 8,000 vehicles that leaked oil onto the exhaust manifold.
- According to Hyundai, the turbocharger oil supply line may have a loose seal, causing oil to leak on to the exhaust manifold, increasing the risk of fire to the vehicle.
Passenger Airbag May Deploy with Child in Seat (NHTSA Safety Recall Campaign No. 18V496000)
- In July 2018, Hyundai recalled more than 3,300 Genesis vehicles equipped with defective passenger airbag systems.
- According to Hyundai, the occupant classification system may incorrectly detect that an adult is in the passenger seat, even if the seat is unoccupied or occupied by a child. In the event of a crash,if a child or infant is in the seat, the front passenger airbag may deploy instead of remaining deactivated to protect the child.
At Wirtz Law APC, we are dedicated to protecting consumers from large automakers like Genesis.
Genesis is the luxury vehicle division of the South Korean vehicle manufacturer Hyundai Motor Group. The Genesis brand was first announced as an independent marque in November 2015, launching their first Genesis standalone model, the Genesis G90, in 2017. Founded in 1967, Hyundai has more than 50 years of car manufacturing experience. First established as an engineering and construction company, Hyundai has quickly grown to produce more than 5 million vehicles a year, including Genesis models, with annual revenues of nearly $106 trillion. Hyundai’s production capacity and ability to make a profit are impressive. Unfortunately, with increased production comes increased opportunity for defects.
“America’s Best Warranty”
Genesis vehicles “enjoy” the same warranty as all Hyundai vehicles. Although Hyundai claims to have “America’s Best Warranty” at 10 years/ 100,000 miles, the company’s advertising paints an unrealistic picture. Genesis drivers are often faced with significant (and unexpected) out-of-pocket costs for repairs that are “not covered” under Hyundai’s famous warranty. Equally frustrating, many consumers suffer the headache of returning to Hyundai’s dealerships time and time again due to persistent problems that are never resolved. Despite impressive marketing, Hyundai and Genesis vehicles are far from perfect.
I think I have a lemon. What do I do now?
Under California’s Lemon Law, if you’ve given an automaker a “reasonable number of attempts” to repair your vehicle but the problems persist, your car might qualify for repurchase or replacement. Big automakers like Genesis often try to muddy the water and re-define the analysis of Lemon Law qualification to their benefit – which is why consumers should never fight the big automakers alone! Generally speaking, as few as two (2) repair opportunities can be enough for your car to qualify. Don’t rely on Genesis’s evaluation of your repair history, contact the professionals at Wirtz Law today.
