Is My Acura a Lemon?
Is My Acura a Lemon?
Acura is Honda’s luxury and performance vehicle line. Launched in 1986, Acura vehicles have become popular in North America, especially in the United States. Acura was the first luxury vehicle line ever offered by a Japanese automaker.
Today, many people buy or lease an Acura because they trust the brand’s reputation for performance, luxury, and safety. Acura’s long history has not prevented these vehicles from experiencing substantial defects.
If your Acura has problems that substantially impair its use, safety, or value, you may have a lemon law claim. To learn more, speak to an experienced California lemon law attorney. Get started today by filling out our online form.
5 Common Problems With Acura Vehicles That Might Mean You Have a Lemon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lists several open recalls for Acura vehicles over the previous twenty model years. Issues with recent model years include:
- Steering gear box damage. An October 2024 recall affects several 2023-2025 model year Acura Integra and Integra Type S vehicles. In some vehicles, the steering gearbox assembly was manufactured incorrectly. Over time, wear on the parts can result in trouble steering the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Rearview camera image problems. In January 2025, Acura recalled several 2025 model year Acura MDX vehicles. The center console touchscreen can go blank, failing to display the rear view camera image. Without a clear view behind the vehicle, drivers may back into a person or structure, causing injuries.
- Engine stalling. In January 2025, nearly 300,000 2022-2025 model year Acura MDX Type-S and 2021-2025 Acura TLX Type-S vehicles were recalled. Engine stalls or loss of power could occur due to a software error in the vehicle’s fuel injection electronic control unit. A stalled engine or loss of power while driving can increase the risk of a vehicle crash, resulting in serious injuries.
- Failure to restart. In March 2025, the NHTSA announced an investigation into an issue with the 2015-2020 Acura TLX and 2016-2020 Acura MDX. Several reports described issues with these Acura vehicles failing to start again after the vehicle’s auto-stop feature engaged. The investigation included a proposed solution from Honda. No official recall has yet been released.
- Steering, power train, brakes, and electrical systems. To date, the NHTSA has received three complaints from owners of 2025 Acura RDX vehicles. These complaints include:
- Multiple cases in which a vehicle’s power steering system failed while driving, making the vehicle extremely difficult to steer.
- Problems in which the steering wheel locked completely, preventing the driver from turning the wheel or steering the vehicle at all. The issue affected the steering, power train, and braking systems.
- One driver described navigating a curve when the steering and brakes locked up. The complaint describes the driver “end[ing] up in a ditch” as a result.
Other vehicle issues can also occur, even if no recall is issued. If you’re dealing with issues with your Acura, it’s important to get your vehicle serviced promptly. Speak to an experienced attorney if the issues persist.
How Does California Lemon Law Protect Me If My Acura is Deemed a Lemon?
To receive lemon law protection, Acura owners or lessees must first give the automaker opportunities to repair the vehicle. Typically, Acura drivers do this by taking their vehicle to a dealership for service. Lemon law may apply if the automaker cannot fix the problem within a “reasonable number” of repair attempts, which may be as few as two repair attempts.
If your car is a lemon, California lemon law requires the automaker to provide a buyback or a “substantially similar” replacement vehicle. The automaker may also be required to cover out-of-pocket costs like towing fees and your reasonable attorney’s fees.
