Is My Land Rover a Lemon?
Land Rover Recalls
Recent Land Rover recalls have highlighted significant vehicle issues, including exterior lighting problems, back-over prevention sensing systems, and airbag sensors. Exterior lighting issues can reduce visibility at night, making it difficult for other drivers to see your vehicle. Faulty back-over prevention systems can fail to detect obstacles or pedestrians behind the car, increasing the risk of accidents. Airbag sensor malfunctions can prevent airbags from deploying correctly in a crash, posing serious safety risks. These defects are not just inconveniences; they are dangerous and can lead to severe injuries or fatalities.
If you’re dealing with a defective Land Rover, contacting an experienced California Lemon Law attorney is crucial. Navigating these cases can be complex, and having professional legal help can make a significant difference. An attorney can help you understand your rights, gather the necessary evidence, and fight for the compensation you deserve.
Recent Land Rover Recalls Involving Vehicle Technology Defects
Land Rover has faced several recalls due to technological defects compromising vehicle safety. Here are some recent recalls and the issues involved:
Back Over Prevention: On January 17, 2024, Land Rover issued a recall for certain 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models equipped with a Surround Camera System. Due to water intrusion, the rearview camera image may not display on the screen. These vehicles do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.” The lack of a clear rearview image can compromise driver visibility, heightening the likelihood of accidents.
Air Bag Sensors: A recall was also issued for specific 2022 New Range Rover models. Improperly fastened front crash sensors may come loose, leading to a malfunction. This defect could interfere with the deployment of the airbags in a collision or even result in accidental airbag activation during driving, both of which raise the risk of an accident.
Auto High Beam (AHB) System: Land Rover recalled certain 2018-2020 Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery, and Range Rover Velar vehicles for issues with the Auto High Beam (AHB) system. This system does not show an indicator in the instrument cluster when high beams activate automatically. Without this notification, drivers might unintentionally keep high beams on, potentially causing glare for oncoming traffic and increasing accident risk.
Electrical Battery System: A recall was also made for some 2020-2021 Land Rover Discovery models. A faulty connection between the battery ground stud and the chassis may lead to various electrical problems, potentially resulting in a loss of power or an unexpected vehicle shutdown while driving, creating a significant safety concern.
Exterior Lighting: On May 31, 2023, certain 2022-2023 Land Rover Range Rover vehicles were recalled due to a potential defect in the rear taillight link. This issue could cause critical exterior lights, such as brake lights, taillights, turn signals, and other rear-mounted lights, to stop illuminating, diminishing the vehicle’s visibility and posing a safety hazard.
Rear Light Assemblies: Another recall affects 2020-2022 Defender X models with smoked rear light assemblies. When a bright light hits the rear of the vehicle, a voltage spike may trigger a failure in the turn signals, brake lights, and taillights. This visibility reduction increases the potential for accidents, as other drivers may not be adequately alerted to the vehicle’s actions.
Electrical System Software Issues: Lastly, on January 25, 2023, Land Rover recalled certain 2020-2021 Range Rover PHEV and 2020-2022 Range Rover Sport PHEV vehicles. These models lack adequate pedestrian warning sounds when stationary or in reverse, in violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 141, “Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles.” In such cases, pedestrians may not notice an approaching vehicle, thus increasing accident risk.
Does California Law Protect Consumers Who Purchased Defective Land Rovers?
California law protects consumers who purchase defective Land Rover vehicles through the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, commonly known as the California Lemon Law. This law ensures that if your Land Rover has significant defects that the manufacturer or dealer cannot fix after a reasonable number of attempts, you are entitled to a replacement or a refund. The law covers both new and certified used vehicles purchased or leased in California that come with a manufacturer’s warranty.
The California Lemon Law applies if the defect substantially impairs the vehicle’s use, value, or safety. Common issues include problems with the engine, transmission, brakes, or electrical system. If your Land Rover meets these criteria, you can seek compensation.
