Transmission Failure

The transmission or gearbox ensures that the correct amount of power reaches your wheels to drive at a given speed. The transmission ensures that the gear ratio between the engine and drive wheels adjusts to accommodate the desired speed of the car.

Common symptoms of transmission failures include:

  • Whining and clunking
  • Burning smell
  • Lack of response, hesitation,
  • Lunging, or jerking
  • Noisy in neutral
  • Leaking fluid
  • Premature clutch replacements

Air Conditioning System Failure

The air conditioning system in your car makes the temperature in the cabin more comfortable while you drive. Cars use a compressor, powered by the serpentine belt, to compress refrigerant into a liquid. The compressed refrigerant travels from the compressor to the condenser to cool off and create the cold air that is then blown into the cabin of the vehicle

Common Symptoms of Air Conditioning System Failure include:

  • System blows warm air on cool setting
  • Foul odors coming from vents
  • Odd sounds coming from vents or engine compartment when AC is on
  • Leaky AC components

Fuel Delivery System Failure

The fuel delivery system consists of all the components that supply the engine with fuel. This includes the tank itself, all the lines, one or more fuel filters, a fuel pump (mechanical or electric), and the fuel metering components–either a carburetor or fuel injection system.

Common Symptoms of fuel delivery system failure include:

  • Rough idle
  • Car stalling
  • Poor fuel efficiency
  • Fuel odors in the cabin of the vehicle while driving, or outside the vehicle when parked
  • Fuel leaks

Engine Cooling System Failure

A car’s engine cooling system is responsible for keeping the engine cool while it works to prevent overheating. The system does so by sending a liquid coolant through hoses and passages in the engine. As the coolant flows through these hoses and passages, it picks up and removes heat from the engine. The water pump has the job of keeping the coolant moving through the system, and the radiator re-cools the liquid so it can again be circulated through the passages in the motor.

Common symptoms of engine cooling system failure include:

  • Overheating, especially on city roads or “stop-and-go” traffic
  • Metallic smell coming from the engine compartment
  • Coolant leaks
  • Steam or smoke emanating from the engine compartment

Turbocharger Failure

The turbocharger on a car applies a very similar principle to a piston engine. It uses the exhaust gas to drive a turbine that spins an air compressor. That extra air and oxygen are pushed into the cylinders at a high speed. This allows the engine to burn more fuel each second, making the car much faster.

Common symptoms of turbocharger failure include:

  • Loss of power
  • Slower and louder acceleration
  • Difficulty maintaining high speeds
  • Blue or grey smoke from the exhaust

Electrical Failure

The car’s electrical system is composed of the battery, starter, and alternator and is responsible for things like starting the car, powering the dashboard, and other electricity dependent systems such as power locks, power windows, sound systems, and lighting, among others. An electrical failure can be caused by a loose electrical connection, a blown fuse, battery failure, or defective components.

Common symptoms of electrical failure include:

  • Battery problems
  • Engine won’t crank
  • Headlights aren’t working properly
  • Burning plastic smell
  • Fuses keep blowing out

Notable Alfa Romeo Recalls

Adaptive Cruise Control May Fail to Deactivate (NHTSA Safety Recall Campaign No. 19V148000)

  • In March 2019, Alfa Romeo recalled nearly 20,000 vehicles with defective braking software.
  • According To Alfa Romeo, The brake system module (BSM) software may prevent the driver from disabling the Adaptive cruise control. The driver’s inability to deactivate the cruise control may result in unexpected acceleration. If the driver does not shift to neutral or apply firm and sustained braking, the vehicle may crash without warning.

Coolant Hose May Leak Causing Stall (NHTSA Safety Recall Campaign No. 18V635000)

  • In September 2018, Alfa Romeo recalled certain 2018-2019 Stelvio Quadrifoglio vehicles equipped with a defective coolant hose.
  • According to Alfa Romeo, the engine cooling hose may have inadequate webbing material allowing for a coolant leak. A loss of coolant can cause the engine to overheat and the vehicle to stall increasing the risk of a crash. The risk of fire is also increased when an engine overheats.

About Alfa Romeo

At Wirtz Law APC, we are dedicated to protecting consumers from large automakers like Alfa Romeo.

Alfa Romeo was founded in June 1910, in Milan, Italy. In 2008, Alfa Romeo became a division of the automotive conglomerate FCA. Formerly known as the Chrysler Group and operating in the U.S. today as FCA US LLC. The Fiat Chrysler Automobiles family also includes Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram.

The most troubling factor about Alfa Romeo is its consistently low-reliability rating. Its vehicles rank among the lowest-ranked vehicles in terms of reliability year in and year out. The car has a dismal 13 percent chance of not requiring any repairs over a three-year period. According to the Reliability Index, one of the main problems falls to the Axle and Suspension. This accounts for 25.91% of all faults. Electrical faults come in second with 18.13% of the faults. Transmission and turbo failure are also very common among Alfa Romeos, which can lead to very costly repairs bills. In short, for many, there is little to love about this Romeo.

I think I have a lemon. What do I do now?

Under California’s Lemon Law, if you’ve given an automaker a “reasonable number of attempts” to repair your vehicle but the problems persist, your car might qualify for repurchase or replacement. Big automakers like Alfa Romeo often try to muddy the water and re-define the analysis of Lemon Law qualification to their benefit – which is why consumers should never fight the big automakers alone! Generally speaking, as few as two (2) repair opportunities can be enough for your car to qualify. Don’t rely on Alfa Romeo’s evaluation of your repair history, contact the professionals at Wirtz Law today.
